We are delighted to have commenced work at one of the most iconic buildings in the UK.
The National Trust's Grade I listed Cragside House in Rothbury, was created by the visionary industrialist and inventor William Armstrong and his wife, Margaret Armstrong, and was the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectricity.
Following a competitive tender process, we were appointed by principal contractor, Datim Building Contractors Ltd, to conserve the property's historic chimney stacks. The works are part of a wider extensive refurbishment of the house roof, with the National Trust appointing Datim Building Contractors to deliver, including the renewal of roof coverings, associated leadwork and rainwater goods.
Mike Moody, managing director, Classic Masonry, said: "Cragside is one of Britain's most significant Victorian country houses and projects of this nature demand the very highest standards of heritage craftsmanship.
"Every aspect of the work has been carefully planned, from the development of bespoke lime mortar mixes through to the delivery of the conservation works alongside the wider roofing programme. Traditional materials and techniques are essential to ensuring the building's historic character is preserved while providing durable repairs for the future.
"Our team has extensive experience of working on nationally important heritage assets, and we're pleased to be working alongside Datim Building Contractors and the National Trust on a project that will help safeguard this remarkable building for generations to come."
We recently announced that, as part of the project team behind the award-winning repair and restoration of the historic North and South Shields Piers, the scheme had won the Medium Project Award at the 2026 ICE Robert Stephenson Awards.
The award recognised the quality, technical complexity and collaborative delivery, celebrating the successful restoration of the iconic Grade II-listed maritime structures while strengthening their resilience against future storm events.

We are currently undertaking works to the grade II listed 16 Barrington Street, South Shields, as part of a major regeneration project.
Built in 1882, it was originally the headquarters of the South Shields Poor Law Union.
We have been appointed by Castle, principal contractor for the new South Tyneside College and South Shields Marine School, of which the listed building is a key component.

We carry out the installation of high-quality architectural precast concrete panels on prestigious construction projects across the UK, and currently have a project in Newcastle upon Tyne starting soon.
Ideally you will have: • Experience installing architectural precast concrete units. • A Lift Supervisor qualification and/or Slinger/Signaller (Banksman) qualification. • A good understanding of safe lifting operations and working with cranes. • CSCS card (appropriate to your role). • A positive attitude, strong work ethic and commitment to quality workmanship.

My dad is a stonemason and my grandad was too, so construction was always part of family life.
Growing up in Newcastle, it wasn't unusual to be walking through the city with them and hear things like, ‘I worked on that’, or ‘your grandad carved that’.
Seeing their work become part of the city's landscape really stuck with me.
It gave me an appreciation that construction isn't just about buildings and infrastructure – it’s about creating something that lasts and becomes part of people's lives and communities for generations.
From an early age, I liked the idea of being part of that. I wanted to contribute in my own way and leave my own mark on the city.
