We are currently undertaking works to the grade II listed 16 Barrington Street, South Shields, as part of a major regeneration project.
Built in 1882, it was originally the headquarters of the South Shields Poor Law Union.
We have been appointed by Castle, principal contractor for the new South Tyneside College and South Shields Marine School, of which the listed building is a key component.
Chris Meadowcroft, operations director, Castle, said: “Classic Masonry is renowned across the UK for its expertise and the quality of its work and we had no hesitation appointing the company to this project.
“While the build of a new campus in the middle of South Shields is the showpiece of this transformational project, 16 Barrington Street is very much representative of the borough’s proud industrial past and, as such, it is important we protect and enhance the façade of the building.”
Classic Masonry Ltd is looking to recruit experienced Precast Concrete Installers to join our specialist team.
We carry out the installation of high-quality architectural precast concrete panels on prestigious construction projects across the UK, and currently have a project in Newcastle upon Tyne starting soon.
Ideally you will have: • Experience installing architectural precast concrete units. • A Lift Supervisor qualification and/or Slinger/Signaller (Banksman) qualification. • A good understanding of safe lifting operations and working with cranes. • CSCS card (appropriate to your role). • A positive attitude, strong work ethic and commitment to quality workmanship.
What we offer: • Immediate start available from Monday 17 August. • Competitive rates of pay (dependent on experience). • Long-term opportunities with a well-established specialist masonry and precast contractor. • Work on prestigious and technically challenging projects throughout the UK.
If you have the relevant experience, or know someone who does, we'd love to hear from you.
Please send your CV or a brief summary of your experience to stone@classicmasonry.co.uk or contact us via LinkedIn for a confidential discussion.
Please feel free to share this post to help us reach the right candidate.

We are very pleased to announce that Classic Masonry Ltd has been awarded the contract to deliver the restoration of the external brickwork and chimneys at the Grade II listed Keelmen’s Hospital in Newcastle.
The works is part of a major regeneration scheme to bring one of the city’s most historically significant buildings back into use.
Working on behalf of main contractor Brims Construction Limited, Classic Masonry is delivering the specialist heritage masonry package, with works carried out using a conservation-led approach, ensuring that as much of the original fabric is retained as possible, with new and reclaimed materials carefully matched to the historic character of the structure.

My dad is a stonemason and my grandad was too, so construction was always part of family life.
Growing up in Newcastle, it wasn't unusual to be walking through the city with them and hear things like, ‘I worked on that’, or ‘your grandad carved that’.
Seeing their work become part of the city's landscape really stuck with me.
It gave me an appreciation that construction isn't just about buildings and infrastructure – it’s about creating something that lasts and becomes part of people's lives and communities for generations.
From an early age, I liked the idea of being part of that. I wanted to contribute in my own way and leave my own mark on the city.

Here’s a pic of our managing director, Mike Moody, delighted to be part of the project team who were recognised and awarded at the 2026 ICE Robert Stephenson Awards.
The North and South Shields Pier Repair won the Medium Project Award, celebrating its successful restoration of iconic Grade II-listed maritime structures while strengthening their resilience against future storm events.
The project team included Southbay Civil Engineering Ltd, Port of Tyne, Total Project Integration, Classic Masonry Ltd and Purcell.
Delivered within a live operational port and harsh marine environment, the project demanded specialist expertise in coastal masonry conservation, heritage restoration, and structural stonework reconstruction. Works were undertaken under challenging tidal and weather conditions while maintaining port operations, public safety, and close coordination with heritage architects, local authorities and multiple stakeholders across two active piers. ... A multi-trade principal contractor role for St Hilda’s Church, Hartlepool, is one of several ecclesiastical projects that Classic Masonry has recently completed.
Further contracts were undertaken at locations across the North East, including Christ Church, Shieldfield and St Andrew’s Church, both Newcastle.
Mike Moody, managing director at Classic Masonry said: “The three churches all had different requirements and it is a tribute to the depth of skill and expertise within our teams that we were able to provide solutions we know will stand the test of time. While each project differed, the combining element that brought them together was their wonderful history and heritage that goes back many hundreds of years.
