When the flagship Fenwick’s department store in Newcastle took over the adjoining building, the Main Contractor employed Classic Masonry to undertake the cleaning, repair, and restoration of the façade including the faience features and sculptures located above the bustling retail high street. The project entailed a comprehensive survey and detailed documentation of the façade with the introduction of a new natural stone parapet detail complete with carved urn features subsequently decorated to match the original facade. The four statues, all associated to Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, were all delicately consolidated using lime-based injection systems to stabilize the cracking before restoration. Our craftspeople worked meticulously to restore the façade to its former glory, while minimizing disruption to the surrounding area.
